Blood Fury — Short cooldown, large burst window. The best Rogue racial here.
Hardiness — Passive stun resistance — always on, nothing to forget.
Berserking — Attack speed when things are going badly.
Regeneration — Real survivability, better paired with a regen buff.
Will of the Forsaken — One of the best PvP racials in the game for a CC target.
Shadow Resistance — Blunts Priests and Warlocks.
Cannibalize — A weak free bandage — usable in stealth.
Stoneform — Counters bleeds from Rogue, Warrior and Hunter, and adds armour briefly.
Frost Resistance — Useful against Frost Mages, little else.
Find Treasure — Twinking is expensive; every edge helps.
Escape Artist — Counters the CC of four other classes.
Engineering Specialization — Access to gadgets other races can't reach yet.
Perception — Spot other Rogues and Druids while they can't spot you.
Sword Specialization — Passive hit chance if you run swords.
Quickness — Flat dodge increase.
Shadowmeld — No cooldown share with Stealth — restealth instantly, and eat or drink safely.
The goggles, your head slot, only come from Engineering, and its bombs and gadgets are useful in any battleground.
Turns spare greens into materials for your own enchants.
Cheap mana potions and elixirs if someone supplies the herbs.
First Aid — A heal that costs no mana. Get to 225 for Mageweave bandages.
Cooking — Only for the Well Fed bonus from the Curiously Tasty Omelet.
Fishing — Not needed for any Mage piece; skip it unless you want the gold.
Every point in Frost. Elemental Precision makes your spells land, Improved Frostbolt speeds up your main spell, Permafrost makes your slows longer and stronger, and Frostbite gives Frostbolt a chance to freeze.
One battle and one guardian elixir at a time. They vanish when you die.
One potion per fight; they share a cooldown.
The Mage at this level is about control: slow everything with Frost, freeze what gets close, and burn targets down while they can't reach you. Gear stacks Intellect and spell damage, and every talent goes into the Frost tree.
Mages have the least troublesome gear of almost any class. Most pieces are world drops, quest rewards or vendor items, and the world drops usually turn up on the Auction House. The goggles are the only crafted piece.

| Situation | Cast | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An enemy is at range | Frostbolt | Damage and a slow; with Permafrost the slow is stronger. |
| Someone reaches you | Frost Nova | Freezes them in place so you can step away. |
| A second enemy joins | Polymorph | Takes one of them out of the fight. |
| The target is nearly dead | Fire Blast | Instant damage to finish it. |
| Enemy caster buffs | Remove Lesser Curse on a friend, Amplify or Dampen Magic | Pick depending on whether you are being healed or hit by spells. |
Frostbolt everything you can, and spread the slows over several enemies. A fight you can slow down is a fight you decide.
Frost Nova, step out, and start again. Polymorph the second attacker. A Swiftness Potion after a Polymorph is a clean escape.
